Wire EDM Services

    1. What is Wire EDM?

Wire EDM (Wire Electrical Discharge Machining) is a specialized thermal machining process. Instead of using traditional mechanical cutting tools, this method utilizes a thin, electrically charged wire (typically brass or molybdenum) as an electrode to cut through conductive materials with extreme precision.

    2. How Does It Work?

The core principle of Wire EDM machining is based on controlled spark erosion.

    • A continuous electrical current is generated between the wire (electrode) and the workpiece.

    • Both are submerged in a dielectric fluid (deionized water or specialized oil).

    • As the wire follows a pre-programmed CNC path, micro-sparks melt and vaporize the material, creating an incredibly thin and sharp kerf.

    3. Common Wire EDM Methods

Based on wire speed and electrode type, there are two primary methods:

    • High-Speed Wire EDM: Utilizes reusable Molybdenum wire. While offering faster cutting speeds, it provides moderate surface finish and accuracy. Yumoto Vietnam currently operates these machines for cost-effective projects.

    • Low-Speed Wire EDM (Slow-feed): Uses single-use brass wire. This is our preferred method for achieving micron-level precision and a superior, mirror-like surface finish that requires little to no post-processing.

    4. The Strategic Role of Wire EDM in Precision Machining

Wire EDM is not just a standalone process; it is a vital link that complements other machining methods to deliver a perfect final product:

    • Sharp Corners & Complex Slots: While CNC Milling is limited by the tool radius (R-factor), Wire EDM can effortlessly create perfect 90-degree internal corners, narrow slots, and intricate, irregular shapes.

    • Hybrid Machining Workflow: To optimize lead times, parts are often rough-milled first. The most intricate features are then finished via Wire EDM to guarantee ultimate dimensional accuracy.

    • Post-Heat Treatment Machining: Ideal for cutting hardened steels without distorting the material's properties.

    • Mold & Die Components: Essential for manufacturing high-precision jigs, fixtures, and complex mold inserts.
