Comparison of Aluminum A5052, A6061, and A7075 in CNC Machining

In CNC machining, aluminum is a very commonly used material thanks to its light weight, good machinability, and high versatility in applications. However, each aluminum grade has different characteristics, which directly affect strength, dimensional stability, surface quality after processing, and product cost.

The three most commonly used aluminum grades today are A5052, A6061, and A7075. Below are the differences between these grades and examples of products made from aluminum at Yumoto Vietnam.

A5052 – Excellent Corrosion Resistance, Beautiful Surface Finish

A5052 belongs to the aluminum–magnesium (Al-Mg) alloy group. It is well known for its high ductility and outstanding corrosion resistance, especially in humid environments or near the sea.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Excellent corrosion resistance
    • High ductility, suitable for thin-walled parts
    • Attractive surface finish after anodizing
    • Not heat-treatable for strength improvement

A6061 – The Most Widely Used Aluminum Grade in CNC Machining

A6061 is the most commonly used aluminum grade in CNC machining thanks to its excellent balance of strength, machinability, and cost.

This material can be heat-treated to the T6 condition, which significantly improves hardness and dimensional stability, making it ideal for high-precision mechanical parts.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Stable machining with minimal deformation
    • Good mechanical strength and wide application range
    • Heat-treatable to T6 condition
    • Reasonable and cost-effective pricing

Products Made from A6061 Aluminum at Yumoto Vietnam:

    A7075 – High Strength for Heavy-Load Applications

A7075 belongs to the aluminum–zinc (Al-Zn) alloy group and offers extremely high mechanical strength, nearly comparable to steel. It is commonly selected for components that must withstand heavy loads and require tight tolerances.

However, A7075 aluminum is more difficult to machine compared to A5052 and A6061 due to more challenging chip evacuation and stricter machining conditions; moreover, its material cost is also higher than that of A5052 and A6061.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Extremely high strength and hardness
    • Suitable for tight tolerances and load-bearing components
    • Lower corrosion resistance compared to A5052
    • Higher cost and requires advanced machining expertise
