PI

PI

PI (Polyimide) is a high-performance engineering plastic known for its excellent thermal resistance (continuous up to ~260°C, short-term up to 400°C), superior electrical insulation, wear resistance, and chemical resistance. It does not melt or burn and offers high dimensional stability under extreme conditions. PI is widely used in aerospace, semiconductors, precision electronics, medical devices, and advanced automation industries.

Characteristics and Features:

Excellent Heat Resistance: Operates stably at high temperatures and withstands higher short-term temperatures.

Good Mechanical Strength and Stiffness: Maintains strength and stiffness over a wide temperature range.

Good Chemical Resistance: Resistant to many oils, greases, solvents, and some acids.

Good Electrical Insulation: An excellent electrical insulator.

Good Dimensional Stability: Less prone to expansion or contraction due to temperature.

Good Wear and Friction Resistance (for some grades).

Good Flame Resistance: Self-extinguishing.

Corresponding CNC Technologies:

CNC Milling: Very suitable for creating precise, heat-resistant, and chemical-resistant parts in the aerospace, electronics, and industrial sectors. Sharp cutting tools and temperature control are necessary to avoid damaging the material.

CNC Turning: Suitable for machining parts with rotational symmetry requiring heat resistance and strength.

CNC Drilling: Precise drilling of holes is possible.

Important Notes:

Difficult to Machine: PI can be quite hard and abrasive, requiring sharp cutting tools (usually carbide) and appropriate cutting speeds.

Potential for Fine Dust Generation: A dust extraction system is necessary to ensure safety.

Common Applications:

PI plastic is CNC machined for high-performance applications in harsh environments:

Aerospace: Seals, bushings, insulation materials.

Electrical and Electronics: Insulation films, connectors, heat-resistant components.

Industrial Equipment: Seals, gaskets, high-temperature and wear-resistant parts.

Medical Equipment: Parts that can withstand sterilization processes.

Analytical Equipment: Components in high-temperature laboratory equipment.

Conclusion: PI plastic is an excellent choice for CNC applications requiring high heat resistance and strength, although machining can be more complex and material costs are higher compared to common plastics.
