Yumoto CNC Machining Case Study: Machining Hastelloy Superalloy with a Tolerance of 0.15 mm

Date Submitted: March 16, 2026

Yumoto Vietnam has recently completed the machining and delivery of 430 parts made from Hastelloy, a special material with extremely high hardness, for a customer in Japan. Although the components are small in size, the technical requirements and precision standards are extremely demanding.

The biggest challenge was machining the cavity section, where the bottom thickness was only 0.1 mm. To achieve this specification without causing surface deformation (backside bulging), our engineering team had to design and manufacture a special jig system to securely fix and protect the workpiece throughout the machining process

One of the characteristics that makes Hastelloy a “nightmare” material in the machining industry is the extremely rapid tool wear it causes. To complete these 430 parts, Yumoto invested in more than 15 different types of specialized cutting tools, with the total tooling cost reaching approximately 90 million VND.

This was not the first time Yumoto has worked with this material, but it was the first time we handled a large quantity of over 400 parts within a tight production schedule of just four weeks. During the machining process, unexpected issues can sometimes occur. The image below illustrates a case where a cutting tool broke due to the extremely high hardness of the material — a real-world challenge that our team immediately analyzed and optimized to ensure the final product quality.
